FIRST
For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) is an organization created by Dean Kamen and Prof. Woodie Flowers in 1989. Its purpose was to get children and young teens to be more interested in science, technology and engineering. They founded the FRC, FTC, FLL and JFLL divisions and competitions.
FIRST’s goal is to promote an environment of teamwork and cooperation. They encourage every team to respect each other, remain friendly, and help each other if needed. Woodie Flowers coined two terms: Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition. The first describes the method of appreciating your peers, never bad mouthing another team and always being respectful. The second describes the concept of working together even when competing. Help each other out and do not be a jerk about it. The Vision and Mission of FIRSTVision“To transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders.” Dean Kamen, Founder Mission Our mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.
